Putting your engagement announcement in the newspaper is a wonderful way to share the news of your engagement.  It's also relatively simple to do and can be a great keepsake to add to your wedding scrapbook.  But, so many couples don't know how to write an engagement announcement.  Well, here's how you can write your engagement announcement.

First, engagement announcements are typically run two to three months before the wedding date and are generally written by the bride's family.  Once the announcement is written, the bride's family should ask the groom's family if they would also like the announcement made in their city.  The bride's family can then send the announcement directly to the newspaper that the groom's parents specify or it can simply be sent to the groom's parents for them to submit.

Here is an example of a standard engagement announcement:

Mr. and Mrs. Robert Smith of Detroit, Michigan, announce the engagement of their daughter, Miss Claudette Katherine Smith, to Mr. John Ryan Brown, son of Mr. and Mrs. Ryan Brown, also of Detroit, Michigan.  An August wedding is planned.
Miss Smith is a 1999 graduate from the University of Wisconsin-Madison and is a Purchaser for Target, Inc.  Mr. Brown is 1998 graduate from the University of Wisconsin-Madison and is a Computer Programmer for GE Medical Systems.

You can follow the format above when writing your engagement announcement, or you can change it up a bit by using phrases like, "the bride-to-be" or "the Groom-elect" and "An August 14 wedding is planned".

There are also many circumstances where the wording must be changed to reflect the situation of the bride and/or groom.  For example, if one of the bride's parents is deceased you would write, "Mrs. Robert Smith of Detroit, Michigan announces the engagement of her daughter, Miss Claudette Katherine Smith to Mr. John Ryan Brown...Miss Smith is also the daughter of the late Robert Smith."  Or, if the groom's parents are divorced, "...son of Mr. John Ryan of Detroit, Michigan and Ms. Jeanne Carlson of Ann Arbor, Michigan."  There are many different combinations of situations that can occur, so if you have a question about how to word your announcement, please feel free to write to me, kelly@bwedd.com
