Alcohol at Wedding Receptions

When most people think about weddings, they think about the party that follows the actual wedding ceremony. They look forward to partaking in the celebration of joy at the wedding reception; seeing old friends, dancing all night (or watching others dance all night), and of course, drinking.

Unfortunately, one of the major costs of a wedding reception where alcohol is served, is the alcohol. So, one great way to save yourself a lot of money is to forego the liquor. Most couples, however, have a hard time eliminating alcohol from their wedding reception because they think their guests may feel awkward or have less fun without it. Here are a couple of options for you to help reduce the cost of alcohol at your wedding reception.

  1. Non-alcoholic wedding - serve punch instead. If you are worried that your guests won't have fun - don't. I have heard so many people say that they had even more fun at alcohol-free wedding receptions. Ask your guests to tell stories about the couple, or have Karaoke available for entertainment. Give them other entertainment options and they probably won't even miss the alcohol.
  2. Champagne Toast - reduce the cost of beverages by just having a champagne toast. Most reception facilities will pour a glass for each guest and you will likely be charged either per bottle or per guest.
  3. Discount Liqour - buy the liquor for your wedding reception at a discount store, like CostCo or Sam's Club. Many of these stores allow you to return unopened bottles, so you only pay for what you use. Of course, your caterer and reception facility must allow you to do this yourself, so be sure to ask before you sign any contracts (and read the contract thoroughly before signing as well). Also, consider putting someone else in charge of this, since you won't want to worry about it on your wedding day.
  4. Cash bar - you can have soda and punch available to your guests, and if they would like beer, wine, or mixed drinks they can purchase them at the cash bar.
  5. One hour open bar - many couples are offering an open bar (beer and wine only) for a cocktail hour before dinner. After dinner, the bar becomes cash only. You may want to consider having soda or punch available.
  6. Beer and wine only - this is still going to be expensive, but it does cost less than offering "Call" or "Premium" liquors at your wedding.

By the way, if you do serve liquor at your wedding, never be shy about asking your guests to drink responsibly. This is one of the most joyous days of your life, and you have a right to ask your guests to keep it that way.

I hope this helps you in your decision-making for your wedding!

Best Wishes,
Kelly Kons
